| Year 8 Rugby team are Coventry Cup Winners (2012 |
Congratulations to Woodlands Academy's Year 8 Rugby Team who beat Bablake 27-22 in the Coventry Schools’ Cup Final. The Year 8 team have had a very successful season playing some tough fixtures including matches against some Independent Schools. They beat Cardinal Newman and Coundon Court en-route to the final. We are looking forward to an even better season next year with a tour planned to Cardiff and the opportunity to represent Coventry Schools’ District and Warwickshire U14 trials. All students are encouraged to take part in sport and fitness activities at Woodlands and rugby offers fantastic opportunities to make friends and develop the characteristics of well rounded individuals. We have had great success in previous years in the Daily Mail Cup, International Tours, Representation for District, County and International Honours. The illustrious old boys include Tom Wood, Danny Grewcock and Neil Back. Hopefully some of these Year 8 boys will become part of that famous history too one day! |

They currently occupy 9th place out of 131 teams. Each month they are set a challenge to train for and practise. Earlier in the year the team were 21st and 17th but have now rowed into the top ten teams. This is a new competition for us to encourage more boys to get involved in Olympic type sports. | Year 8 Football Team - Coventry Cup Winners |
This season, our Year 8 football team have produced a number of fantastic performances. Team manager, Mr McAteer, said “All of the players have grown in confidence and ability which contributed to another successful season.” He added “during the English School’s Cup competition, the players showed a maturity with their performances by keeping possession for the majority of the games and as a result did not concede a goal at all.”
In the West Midlands Cup, the team cruised to the semi-final by winning comfortably against some outstanding schools. However, they were unfortunate to lose 1-0 to the eventual winners Thomas Telford School. This was only the first defeat in open play since they started at The Woodlands School and they were unfortunate not to take the game into extra time and penalties. Despite this setback, the team progressed into the final of the Coventry Cup, beating last year’s joint cup winners (along with The Woodlands School) Cardinal Wiseman 3-0. Learning from previous mistakes they produced a great team performance in the final, not by only showing their ability, but also by demonstrating values such as sportsmanship, encouragement, friendship and determination, which made them great representatives of The Woodlands School. |

Tom Wood (ex-Woodlands) England Rugby
Staff were delighted to hear that Tom Wood had been selected to start for England in the Six Nations match v Wales on Friday 4th February.
Tom was a member of the school touring squad which went to Australia in 2001, to follow the British Lions. There are many memories of Tom from his school rugby career. He played in the back row from his early days, and it was clear even in Year 7 that Tom was a different sort of player. In Australia he was the staff Player of the Tour.
Tom also did well academically, leaving The Woodlands with a host of GCSEs and three good ‘A’ levels, grades which would have seen him gain a place at a good university, if rugby union hadn’t had a stronger call on his future. He also won a school award for art, showing his versatility.
We would like to pass on our congratulations to Tom and his family for this massive personal achievement. |

Jordan Graham (11El) England U16
Congratulations to Jordan who was selected to play for England U16 (football) in a game against Wales U16 in the Victory Shield. Although England lost the game 4-0, Jordan's skills stood out and he received fantastic reviews from Sky Sports pundits throughout the live televised game as he battled in the rain to try to help his team against a very strong Wales side. First he played on the left-wing before being moved to the right side. In the second half the Wales coach saw Jordan as one of England's strongest players and tried to have Jordan tightly marked, but he switched back to the left-hand side once again. Jordan took England's corners and free-kicks and stood out as one of the most talented players on the pitch. |
