McLachlan Year 7's love reading
Every other Wednesday during morning registration, the Year 7 McLachlan students go as a tutor group to the Learning Resource Centre. Whilst there they choose something to read and sometimes their tutor, Mrs Palmer, reads a book with the students. They are especially enjoying the Cherub Books. The students also use the time to renew and take out books in addition to talking about what they're reading with their peers. The Guinness Book of Records is a firm favourite!

Calum Domican says his favourite book is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Calum said "I like this book because I like the films and it is the first book and there is a lot of action. It starts you on a magical journey."   The Recruit is Tom Brooks's favourite book. He says "I like it because it is action-packed and sometimes funny. It makes me relax and takes me to a quiet place. The description in the book is very good which helps me picture what is happening. I think The Recruit is a great book which makes you wish it was real!"   Jack Hales says "My favourite book is Assassins Creed. I like the book because it is an adventure book. I like learning about what the Templars were like in the 16th century as I went to Templars Primary School. The main character is Ezio and he searches for the secret of his ancestor. They were both looking for the grand templar."

Paddling towards success!
Tom Goddard, 11Mc, is fast becoming one of the most successful young kayakers in Great Britain. Tom started paddling at the age of 12 at a local pool where he was introduced to freestyle kayaking. He entered the Youth Freestyle competition which is where paddlers compete against all other kayakers over Great Britain. The competitions took place in Nottingham, Cardiff, Northampton and in Yorkshire. This year he came second in his age group category and was the highest scoring non-sponsored paddler. He also took part in the GB selection events this year and has now qualified for a place on the GB Freestyle Team as first reserve. Tom also entered the GB selection events for Squirt Boating and has also been very successful and has qualified for a place on the GB Squirt Boating Team as first reserve. Tom spends most of his weekends paddling. We look forward to hearing of Tom's future successes and wish him well in the competitions he is taking part in this year.

Our Year 7's visit Warwick Caslte
On Wednesday 5th October, our Year 7's joined the rest of the year group on a visit to Warwick Caslte where they had a great day learning new things to use in their caslte project in their history lesson. Click here to read their comments about the trip.

School Fete
The Woodlands School held a summer fete on Saturday 11th June which was an outstanding success. Each House put on different activities and stalls and the fete was very well received by both students and visitors from far and wide. Stalls included face painting, ‘splat-the-rat’, ‘play-your-cards-right,’ ‘open-the-box’, a snooker tournament and Woodlands’ very own little rock band, ‘The Prospects’, to name a few. By far the most popular stall was ‘splat the teacher’! Mrs Palmer (pictured in the stocks, above) said “the students relished the opportunity to throw sponges at their teachers without consequences!” Food and drink was provided with a barbeque, a cake stall and an ice-cream van. Mrs Palmer added, “Due to the success of this year’s event, we are hoping to make a school summer fete an annual event, but even bigger and better next time”. Mrs Palmer said “All of the money raised in McLachlan House on the day will be used to provide extras for the students including a new inter-House sports kit.”
Year 11 McLachlan Assembly
In McLachlan House, the students said they wanted a bit more variety in terms of assemblies, so staff decided to let the students get involved by participating in tutor group assemblies.  Some students from Year 11 began with an assembly on "Woodlands - the best bits".  In total six boys took part, including Josh Henry who talked about his achievement in becoming Head Boy which is the most prestigious student position in the House.  Tom Parkes also made a very inspirational speech about his achievements, in particular his Engineering Diploma.  Tom was one of the highest ranking boys in the House, in terms of exam results, achieving 11 and a half GCSE's at C and above including a number of A's. Each participant was awarded a certificate for his Record of Achievement.

Fundraising for the Coventry Boot Fund

In McLachlan house we were ecstatic with the amount raised in the first charity raising event of the year.  A total of £85 was raised from a cake sale and a sponsored leg wax.  Mrs Vernon’s exemplary cake making skills were put to the test and all cakes were sold at break and lunch time.  The leg waxing also proved to be a very popular event, with student’s and a member of staff volunteering to take part.  All money raised will go to the Coventry children’s boot fund.  The Children's Boot Fund was founded in the poverty of industrial Coventry at the end of the 19th century. It has served the children of the city through two world wars; the depression of the thirties, and the up's and down's of the late 20th century.  With the current recession there are more families struggling to make end’s meet, resulting in the fund needing all the help it can get.  The fund provides grant’s to those most in need and made 1040 grants last year.

Year 7 Mob Match

Year 7 McLachlan were fantastic in their first ever school sports activity.  We had a great turnout for the mob match which took place within the boys first week of school.  The group ended up in third place out of the six Houses.  It’s a great sign of things to come for 7 McLachlan.
