Drama |
At KS3 pupils are taught a varied curriculum in mixed ability groups. The emphasis is predominantly on teaching the basics of theatre craft and the skills and techniques required to create effective drama. On a secondary level it teaches the boys presentation skills, communication skills and how to approach working in a group. There is also a large significance placed on fun and enjoyment.
In KS4 we follow the AQA Drama and Theatre Studies syllabus. Boys are required to work in groups to present pieces of practical coursework. This can be scripted work, improvised work, devised work or theatre in education. The written element of the course comes via an examination at the end of the two years where boys answer questions on a set text and live theatre that they have seen.
In the unique Year 11 curriculum we are offering a BTEC First Certificate in Performing Arts which, combines Music and Drama, to provide a ‘taster’ of life in the performing arts business. We also offer a short Theatre in Education module where students work in groups to create a piece of theatre which will then be taken into local primary schools.
We follow the Edexcel Drama syllabus at A Level. This encourages pupils to explore the key theatrical practitioners in greater depth and facilitate their understanding of what makes good theatre through theoretical and practical exploration. |

Music |
Students experience a variety of music through performing composing and listening exercises. The focus at KS3 is to encourage confidence in performance, particularly in front of peers and also to encourage support among peers as the classes are all taught in mixed ability groups. Skills are developed through Samba percussion ensemble work, basic melody and harmony projects using keyboards and piano and listening tasks to improve aural perception. The composing element of KS3 is covered using the notation software package Sibelius on the department’s computers. |
