  Introduction News & Events Curriculum  
 
The SEN Curriculum is built around the individual needs of the students in each class. Its aim is to enable students to access other areas of the curriculum by improving their literacy skills, teaching study skills and giving support with GCSE coursework.
Years 7 – 10 SEN Groups all receive the following literacy support, as appropriate to their needs:
Reading
Independent reading
 
Short story comprehension exercises - ‘Lightening Reads 1 & 2’
 
‘Wildcats’ Reading Scheme 
 
 
Word Features
Consonants: blends, digraphs, silent, double, special.
 
Vowels: long/short sounds, digraphs, dipthongs.
 
 
Spelling
Phonics
 
Spelling Patterns: Word families; Common letter strings; Different pronunciation; Plurals; Verb tenses.
 
Word Structure: Syllables; Compound words; Prefixes; Suffixes; Possessives; Abbreviations
 
Word Building: Homophones; Synonyms; Antonyms
 
Spelling Rules
 
 
Work on extending vocabulary
 
 
Study Skills
Information retrieval; Concentration; Organisation; Recording information in simple form
